Spiritual Workout Plan


My wife and I have realized we need more structure for our own spiritual muscles. We decided to try and come up with something concrete that we can use to grow. I know that in the past I have set my goals too high and become quickly disheartened.

Matt Chandler had just done a sermon detailing some baby steps to be taken, which is where I got these preliminary numbers from (as well as the quote from him as well).

Week 1

Pray in the morning and at night.

Week 2

Pray for 15 minutes a day (including once in morning, once at night).

Meditate on scripture for 5 minutes.

Week 4

Pray for 15 minutes a day (including once in morning, once at night).

Meditate on scripture for 5 minutes.

Memorize 5 scriptures a week.

Week 6

Pray for 15 minutes a day (including once in morning, once at night).

Meditate on scripture for 5 minutes.

Memorize 5 scriptures a week.

Read 15 minutes a day of a serious theological book.

  • -Praying 15 minutes a day for 365 days a year is 5,475 minutes (or 91-1/2 hours of prayer); that’s four days of prayer a year.
  • -Meditating on 365 different scriptures and passages.
  • -Memorizing 5 scriptures a week for a year is 260 scriptures.
  • – Reading a theological book for 15 minutes a day, in one year, you would have read for 5,475 minutes. Multiply that times 250 words per minute, and you get 1.3 million words per year. Now most books have between 300 and 400 words per page. So if you take 350 words per page and divide that into 1.3 million words per year, you get 3,910 pages per year. This means that at 250 words a minute for 15 minutes a day, you would have read 20 average-sized books a year.

  1. I have been trying to up my game with regards to studying God’s word too, there are quite a few apps that have helped with reading schedules.

    One thing that my wife and I have found as extremely powerful is couple prayer, or praying together as a couple.

    Good luck, I will be praying that your endeavors are fruitful.
